Worship

Here at Followers of Christ, worship is how we live according to our mission—To know Christ… And to make Christ known.

We come to know Jesus Christ first and foremost through worship. Through the hearing, the preaching, and the teaching of Holy Scripture—spoken and sung—we hear Christ’s words addressed to us. We learn to trust and follow him. By his gracious call to discipleship, we are challenged and inspired to make Christ known.

We come to know Jesus Christ through Holy Communion. Each week Christ shows up as promised in Holy Communion, otherwise known as the Lord’s Supper. We hear Jesus’ words spoken to us, “This is my body given for you. This is my blood shed for you, for the forgiveness of sin.” Christ’s promise to be with us takes hold of us as we share this simple meal of bread and wine. By his faithful presence in our lives, we are challenged and inspired to make Christ known.

Worship is, finally, our response to God made known to us in Jesus Christ. Through song and prayer, music and silence, we give thanks and praise to God. We call on God for help in our time of need. We ask God to further the gracious work of his kingdom, using us and other people throughout the world.

The patterns and rhythms of the liturgy have a way of forming us into followers of Christ—people whose desires, words, and actions are deeply shaped by God and his kingdom. We are challenged and inspired to make Christ known.
